INTRODUCTION
Often referred to as “Sintang” in the hobby, Bucephalandra pygmaea ‘Bukit Kelam’ is perhaps the most iconic and reliable variety of the Bucephalandra genus. Named after the famous “Black Hill” (Bukit Kelam) in Borneo, this plant is beloved for its manageable size and beautiful, wavy-edged leaves.
Unlike some of the more temperamental “Buces,” ‘Bukit Kelam’ is remarkably hardy, making it the perfect “entry-level” variety for those looking to explore this exotic genus. It features deep green to brownish-red leaves that develop a subtle silvery-blue iridescence under the right lighting.

IN THE WILD
This species is found exclusively on the island of Borneo, specifically in the Sintang region of West Kalimantan.
- River Dweller: It grows as a rheophyte along the banks of forest streams. In the wild, it spends part of the year fully submerged and the other part emersed in high-humidity tropical air.
- The “Black Hill” Habitat: It is often found growing on damp rocks and stones near waterfalls, where the constant spray provides the moisture it needs to thrive.
- Natural Resilience: Because it evolved to survive the turbulent currents of tropical rivers, its root system is incredibly strong and designed to “grip” onto almost any hard surface.
IN THE AQUARIUM
‘Bukit Kelam’ is a versatile workhorse in the aquascape. It typically grows to a height of 3–5 cm, making it excellent for detailing.
- Rhizome Rule: Like all epiphytes, the horizontal rhizome must remain above the substrate. Tying or gluing it to rocks, wood, or lava stone is the best way to ensure health.
- Leaf Texture: The leaves are slightly thicker and more “leathery” than many other aquatic plants, which makes them very resistant to herbivorous fish and snails.
- Low Light Tolerance: It is one of the best “Buces” for low-tech tanks. While it won’t grow as fast or show as much color as it would with CO2, it will remain healthy and green in very low light.
- Flow Enthusiast: It appreciates a gentle current, which helps deliver nutrients to the leaves and prevents debris from settling on the slow-growing foliage.
PROPAGATION
Because ‘Bukit Kelam’ tends to branch out more readily than other varieties, it is quite easy to propagate once established:
- Identify the Branch: Look for a side shoot or a section of the rhizome that has several leaves and visible roots.
- The Division: Use sharp aquascaping scissors to snip the rhizome.
- The 4-Leaf Standard: Ensure your new cutting has at least 4 healthy leaves. This ensures the plant has enough stored energy to recover from the stress of being cut.
- Secure: Use a tiny dot of cyanoacrylate-based glue or thread to attach the new cutting to a small stone or piece of wood.
MY OBSERVATIONS
‘Bukit Kelam’ is the “reliable friend” of the Bucephalandra world. While ‘Kedagang’ is flashy and dramatic, ‘Bukit Kelam’ provides a consistent, lush green texture that fills in gaps beautifully.
Pro-Tip: If you see a small white “flower” (spathe) emerge, enjoy it! It is a sign that the plant is very happy. If the flower begins to decay after a week or two, you can snip it off at the base to encourage the plant to put its energy back into leaf growth.
