Bucephalandra ‘Kedagang’ Care Guide

B

INTRODUCTION

In the world of rare aquatic plants, Bucephalandra ‘Kedagang’ is a crown jewel. This specific cultivar is famous for being one of the most colorful and visually striking “Buces” in the hobby. It features long, slender leaves with heavily ruffled edges and a dark, metallic coloration that can range from deep purple to “blue-black.”

What truly sets ‘Kedagang’ apart is the presence of tiny white dots (iridescent spots) on the leaves, which shimmer under aquarium lighting. It is a slow-growing, premium epiphyte that adds an undeniable touch of luxury to any aquascape.

IN THE WILD

Bucephalandra is endemic to the island of Borneo, found nowhere else on Earth.

  • The Rheophyte Lifestyle: In the wild, ‘Kedagang’ grows as a “rheophyte”—a plant adapted to living in fast-moving tropical streams. They cling to volcanic rocks and stones, often subjected to powerful currents and flash floods.
  • The “Blue” Adaptation: The dark, iridescent colors are thought to be an adaptation to help the plant capture specific light wavelengths in the shaded, jungle-covered riverbeds of the rainforest.
  • Flowering: It is one of the few aquarium plants that will regularly flower underwater, producing a small, elegant white “spathe” (similar to a Peace Lily).

IN THE AQUARIUM

‘Kedagang’ is a versatile plant that rewards patience with stunning aesthetics.

  • Never Bury the Rhizome: Just like Anubias, the rhizome must be exposed to the water column. If buried in substrate, it will rot and the plant will perish.
  • Color Development: While it will survive in low light, ‘Kedagang’ only reveals its true metallic purple and blue hues under medium-to-high intensity lighting with supplemental CO2.
  • Water Stability: Bucephalandra are sensitive to sudden swings in water parameters. They prefer clean, well-oxygenated water with consistent maintenance.
  • The “Melt”: When introduced to a new tank, Buces may occasionally drop their leaves. Do not panic—as long as the rhizome remains firm, new, adapted leaves will soon sprout.

PROPAGATION

Propagating ‘Kedagang’ is a delicate but rewarding process. Because it grows so slowly, it is best to wait until the plant is well-established before attempting to divide it.

  1. Locate the Growth Points: Look for sections of the rhizome that have sprouted their own roots and at least 5-6 leaves.
  2. The Cut: Use a very sharp, sterilized blade to slice through the rhizome. Ensure the cut is clean to prevent infection.
  3. The 5-Leaf Minimum: Because ‘Kedagang’ grows so slowly, ensure each new cutting has at least 5 leaves. Smaller cuttings may struggle to photosynthesize enough energy to survive the transition.
  4. Re-attachment: Secure the new cutting to a rock or piece of wood using aquarium-safe glue or thread.

MY OBSERVATIONS

‘Kedagang’ is arguably the best “detail” plant for a high-end aquascape. Because of its dark color, it creates incredible depth when placed next to bright green plants like Anubias nana or Hemianthus callitrichoides (HC Cuba).

Pro-Tip: ‘Kedagang’ loves water flow. If you place it in a “dead spot” in your tank with no circulation, it is more likely to collect detritus and develop algae. Place it near your filter outlet or in a high-flow area to keep the leaves clean and the colors vibrant.

BUYING OPTIONS

We are proud to offer Bucephalandra ‘Kedagang’ in two formats, both ensuring the highest quality for your aquarium:

1. Tissue Culture

The most cost-effective and safest way to collect ‘Kedagang’.

  • Quantity: Each cup contains multiple individual rhizomes and plantlets.
  • Pest Free: Guaranteed 100% free of snails, algae, and leeches—essential for a slow grower that can’t easily outgrow pests.
  • Best for: Nano tanks or hobbyists looking to “seed” many different areas of a hardscape at once.

2. 6×4 Living Wall Mats

An absolute showstopper for an instant “primeval” look.

  • Mature Aesthetic: These mats feature dozens of ‘Kedagang’ rhizomes that have grown together into a dense, metallic-purple carpet.
  • Ease of Use: Simply place the mat onto your hardscape or use it to cover a large rock. It provides an immediate “wow factor” that would normally take years of growth to achieve.
  • Best for: Display tanks and those who want an established, professional-looking “Buce Forest” overnight.
