INTRODUCTION
The ‘Flamingo’ is arguably the most famous and sought-after Cryptocoryne in the world. It is a stunning cultivar known for its intense neon-pink leaves. Unlike other Crypts that lean toward brown or olive, ‘Flamingo’ provides a shocking splash of bright, bubblegum pink that serves as a perfect centerpiece for the foreground or midground.

IN THE WILD
As a cultivar, ‘Flamingo’ was born in a laboratory. It is a sport of Cryptocoryne wendtii, which is native to Sri Lanka. The mutation that causes the pink coloration makes the plant more delicate than its wild green ancestors.
IN THE AQUARIUM
- Color Trigger: To maintain the neon-pink hue, you must provide high-intensity light. Under low light, the plant will fade to a duller reddish-brown.
- Substrate: As a heavy root feeder, it requires nutrient-rich aquasoil or root tabs.
- The “Crypt Melt”: This variety is sensitive to changes. Expect some leaf melt upon introduction, but do not disturb the roots; it will sprout new pink leaves as it acclimates.
PROPAGATION
- Runners: Like most Crypts, it sends out underground runners.
- Division: Once the mother plant is bushy, you can gently pull it apart at the roots to create new individual plantlets.
MY OBSERVATIONS
‘Flamingo’ is the “diva” of the Crypt world. It grows very slowly, so keep it away from fast-growing plants that might shade it out. A stable environment is the secret to keeping it pink and healthy.
BUYING OPTIONS
- Tissue Culture : The best way to buy ‘Flamingo’. Lab-grown plants are healthier and have a better survival rate during the transition to your tank.
- Living Mats: For an instant “Pink Meadow.” These mats provide an established root system that helps bypass the long waiting period of this slow grower.
