INTRODUCTION
If you want a plant that screams “centerpiece,” Alternanthera reineckii ‘Rosanervig’ (often called ‘Mini Rosanervig’ or ‘Variegated AR’) is the answer. It is one of the most visually stunning cultivated varieties of the Alternanthera genus.
What makes this plant unique is the vivid pink-to-white vein pattern on its deep magenta leaves. This variegation creates a striking “lace” effect that remains bright even under water. It is a compact, bushier version of the standard AR, making it an ideal choice for adding a “pop” of intense red and pink to your midground.

IN THE WILD
The parent species, Alternanthera reineckii, is native to South America, specifically the marshlands and riverbanks of Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina.
- Marshland Specialist: In its natural habitat, it grows both emersed (above water) and submersed. The ‘Rosanervig’ variety is a specific cultivar selected for its unique genetic mutation that causes the bright leaf veins.
- Sunlight and Iron: In the wild, these plants thrive in iron-rich soils and high sun exposure. This combination is what triggers the production of anthocyanins—the pigments responsible for the red and pink colors.
IN THE AQUARIUM
‘Rosanervig’ is famous for its compact growth habit and its ability to maintain its color.
- The Color Trigger: To get that signature neon-pink variegation, you need high light and a consistent supply of iron. If the light is too low, the plant will turn a muddy brown/green and lose its unique vein pattern.
- CO2 and Nutrients: While some Alternanthera varieties can survive without CO2, ‘Rosanervig’ really requires it to thrive and stay compact. Without CO2, it often becomes “leggy” (large gaps between leaves).
- Placement: It looks best when planted in groups of 3–5 stems in the midground. Because it doesn’t grow as tall as the “Pink” or “Cardinal” varieties, it won’t block your background plants.
PROPAGATION
As a stem plant, AR ‘Rosanervig’ is easy to propagate once it reaches a healthy height:
- The Topping Method: When the stems reach 10–15 cm, use sharp shears to cut off the top 5 cm of the plant.
- Strip the Base: Remove the bottom two pairs of leaves from the cutting to reveal a bare stem.
- Replanting: Push the cutting into the substrate. It will quickly grow new roots.
- The “Bush” Effect: The original bottom half of the stem will sprout two new side shoots from the cut node, making the plant look much denser and bushier over time.
MY OBSERVATIONS
Many people struggle with AR varieties “melting” or losing their bottom leaves. In my experience, this is almost always due to a lack of light reaching the base or a lack of flow.
Pro-Tip: Don’t let this plant get shaded by overhanging driftwood or taller plants. It is a light-hungry species. Also, keep your nitrates (NO3) at a moderate level; if nitrates bottom out, the plant can become brittle and the leaves may start to pinhole.
BUYING OPTIONS
We offer Alternanthera reineckii ‘Rosanervig’ in two premium formats to ensure the best color and health:
1. Tissue Culture
The most reliable way to get that vibrant pink variegation.
- Clean Start: Guaranteed free from snails, algae, and common aquarium pests.
- Form: These are already in their submersed form, which means they transition to your tank much faster than farm-grown stems.
- Best for: Precision planting in high-tech nano tanks or new setups.
2. Living Mats
For an immediate “Red Zone” in your aquarium.
- Established Density: These mats feature dozens of stems grown into a thick, lush carpet.
- Instant Impact: Instead of waiting months for individual stems to bush out, the mat provides an immediate wall of pink-veined foliage.
- Best for: Larger aquascapes or Dutch-style tanks where you want a solid, mature block of red color from day one.
